Awkwafina is an American rapper, television personality, actress, and comedian. She is known for her roles in the films Dude, Ocean’s 8, Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, Paradise Hills, Jumanji: The Next Level, Breaking News in Yuba County, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Swan Song, and Renfield, voice-over characters, including in Raya and the Last Dragon and The Bad Guys, and appearing on television’s Girl Code and Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens.
Her father, Wally Lum, works in information technology, and is American, of Chinese ancestry. Her father’s family ran Cantonese restaurant Lum’s in Queens. Her mother, Hong Heun-joo, “Tia,” was Korean, from Seoul, and moved to the U.S. in 1972; she was an artist. Awkwafina was raised in Forest Hills, Queens.
One of Awkwafina’s paternal great-grandfathers was Gum Fang “Jimmy” Lum (the son of Xi Long Lum). Gum was born in China. He opened the Chinese restaurant Lum’s in New York.
Awkwafina’s paternal grandmother is named Powah.
Awkwafina’s maternal grandfather was named Hong Yun-chun.
