Frances Sternhagen was an American actress. Her roles include the films Up the Down Staircase, The Hospital (1971), Two People, Fedora, Starting Over, Outland (1981), Independence Day (1983), Romantic Comedy, Bright Lights, Big City; See You in the Morning, Communion (1989), Sibling Rivalry, Misery, Doc Hollywood, Raising Cain, Highway (2002), Stephen King’s The Mist, Julie & Julia, Dolphin Tale, and And So It Goes; the series Cheers, Tales from the Crypt, ER, Sex and the City, and The Closer; the mini-series Stephen King’s Golden Years; and many acclaimed stage plays, including two Tony-winning performances.

She was the daughter of Gertrude (Hussey), a nurse during WWII, and John Meier Sternhagen, a tax court judge and a member of the U.S. Board of Tax Appeals. Frances was married to stage, film, and television actor Thomas A. Carlin, until his death, with whom she had six children.
